I am frequently teased for a comment I made after giving birth to Owen. Much of our kind and patient family was at the hospital waiting for Owen's arrival. They were invited into the room almost immediately after he came. As our parents and almost all our siblings surrounded the hospital bed to admire our sweet bundled angle baby, I laid my head back on the pillow and said "that was tiring". I now realize that I was totally UNDERSTATING the OBVIOUS. Like what else would child labor be right? BUT honestly I didn't know that! Every experienced mother had given me the impression that after getting the epidural, your body just does the work. In fact, I think those were one woman's words exactly. I was expecting to feel quite a bit of pain on the way to the hospital, and then get that giant needle in my spine and be totally comfortable. After getting the epidural I kept saying that I was hurting, to which my sweet nurse would respond..."I think your confusing pressure with pain". Hmmm maybe I'm a wimp, but to me pressure always has been pain, and this pain was pressure, and this pressure was pain. I'm so glad I couldn't feel the real pain. I was so naive to assume that epidural equals walk in park, but I was honestly not warned that it is exhausting. Pushing for two hours, hot flashes, cold flashes, hands shaking, face sweating, pressure feeling, exhausting!!! So, to any pre-motherhood women reading this, I wish upon every star that you'll have the opportunity to take advantage of the miraculous modern day medication that for me made giving birth possible, however please consider this your warning, it's tiring.
I'm going to say the same about the half marathon I ran last weekend in St. George. It was tiring.
What I learned:
It's hard.
I can do hard things.
It's ok to remove myself from being with people, close my mouth, and be alone with my music and my thoughts. I actually enjoy it.
I am a slow person. Even after lots of training.
It's so invigorating to be running in a herd of 1500 people in the fresh, fresh air surrounded by beautiful red rock.
I don't think I could do a full.
It's comparable to giving birth with an epidural.
We had a fun weekend, kickin it...just the three of us.
Way to go Sara!!!! I was thinking about you all weekend. The weather, the run, the drive and Owen. Good job doing it, you are seriously amazing and my inspiration to get back into shape. You are so motivated and just do what you want to do. Hope we can see you soon and hear more about the marathon!
That's awesome that you completed that! Running has never been one of my passions or strong points, but the more I've been thinking about it the more I'd like to start. I think it would be a nice getaway from life for a bit, but I know I could never be a marathon runner. That's so great!
Sara!! Good for you!! I am so sad I didn't get to see you last time we were in town!! Next time I want to see you and Owen forsure! I'm so proud of you, that's quite an accomplishment! xoxo
What a great accomplishment...both birthing and the race. :) I will have to say that my first labor experience was a nightmare similar to yours and yes, my epidural only worked on my right side. After the delivery I felt like I had been run over by a dump truck.
Then second time around my epidural actually worked on my whole body and after the delivery I felt like that was a breeze and I could do that every day. I think it just makes such a difference when the epidural actually does its job!
Congratulations on the marathon! I'm so impressed! And after giving birth I think we're all allowed to say some embarassing things- we earned it! Hope we can see you guys soon- it's almost picnic at the park weather soon (sort of)
wow, I had no idea, good job! lol to your birthing story, I think the difference for you was the pushing for 2 Hours! part, I was exhausted too with abe, but with belle it was like 2 minutes of pushing and it really was kind of a walk in the park (don't tell Josh; ) Anyway, I think that nurse should be shot for saying the pressure/pain thing, the nerve of telling a woman in labor she's not in pain! ; )
Sara, I ran that half marathon last year. Didn't you think it was a great one? Such a good, mild run. I agree about running amongst tons of people .....so invigorating.
Sara - you are inspirational! I am so impressed by you and your desire to run a marathon. I wish I had the desire, it seems like such a huge accomplishment. Birth is tiring - even a c-section, when you just lie there and do nothing - it's tiring. I wish I could have been there to cheer you on and congratulate you at the finish line.
I nam totally laughing right now! "That was tiring." !!!! That is so great!!! I can just hear your dad laughing right now! You are so great, Sara. Everytime I read your blog, I am touched by how cute/adorable/amazing you are.
I totally second JoAnna, I feel the same way. Every time I read your blog I'm filled with how much I adore you. You truly are one of my favorite people on earth. I have a HUGE admiration for people who run period, let alone run 1/2 marathons and such. Congratulations! I'm sorry if I was ever one of those moms who mislead you, but truly most of my labors have really been a lot easier than yours sounds so maybe next time yours will be a walk in teh park.
