For a long time now, our dishwasher has been leaving a weird, white, chalky film on all our dishes. When I was explaining it to our cute 16 year old babysitter she said "oh ours did that too, and then it broke completely". In fear of a necessary large appliance purchase and lots of hand-washing I called an appliance company. The receptionist asked for a description of the problem over the phone, and then put me on the schedule. She also gave me the set price of $85 for the visit, and any parts would be additional. When the employee came out he asked me what was going on with the dishwasher. As I showed him he was looking at me nodding the whole time...like there was no need for further explanation. His response was "yeah, we see this all the time. It's actually just hard water. Almost everyone in your city, and the surrounding ones have it, there's nothing you can do except, throw a little vinegar in during the wash cycle." He opened the dishwasher, wrote down the model number and started writing up the ticket. Then I said "So 85 dollars?". He looked at me a little shameful and said "actually $90.76 with tax".
He was in my home for no more than three minutes! $30.26 a minute!!! Shouldn't that receptionist be informed that everyone in at least 3 cities has this problem ( I think she actually knew)? Shouldn't she notify the caller that it's not an appliance malfunction, but is infant the water, and recommend a 3 dollar bottle of vinegar over the phone?! How do they sleep at night?! Pure robbery in my opinion. They may be getting a letter on ethics from a very unsatisfied customer soon.
On a happy note:
Owie got a haircut. With each trim I think he looses a little bit of curl and a whole lot of his baby-ness, but he looks so "sansome"!
For about a month I had been experiencing off and on chest pain. Sometimes it would just be a little discomfort, sometimes lots of pain, in my lungs, throat, and even making me nauseous. I was positive it was respiratory, because of the shortness of breath that accompanied it. After letting my mind get a little carried away and talking myself into the fact that I definitely had come down with something like walking pneumonia, or pleurisy I decided to go to the Dr. I wasn't there because the pain was absolutely unbearable, but more because I didn't want to die in my sleep that night. One co-pay, lots of tests, 586 questions, a throat culture that made me cry. (UGH!) a "Gastrointestinal cocktail", and an hour and half of sitting on crinckly paper later, I was officially diagnosed with heart burn. EM-barrassing! I've experienced heart burn after eating spicy food, but it's nothing like this. When I had to come home and tell my husband who had taken half a day off of his busy work schedule what I had, I really wished there was a more validating name than heart burn. Lame.

Oh my goodness! That is terrible that they made you pay that much for NOTHING!! I'm so sorry. If it makes you feel any better our dishwasher has been broken since we moved in, so almost a year and a half of handwashing dishes for me! :( Owen looks so adorable with his hair cut, and good for him for still cheering on the Cougs. I've given up on this horrible season. Sorry about your heartburn! I never have it except when I'm pregnant and then it's really bad. Tums helped me!
I hope you feel better soon. That sounds like no fun at all. Don't be embarrassed!
Owen is so stinking cute! I love those little curls so much and his new haircut is totally handsome :)
just love your posts sara. you are such a fun writer. i am sorry to hear about our heartburn. i think i had that too but felt silly going to the doctor. . . so kudos to you for going!!! i would have felt better knowing that's what it actually was.
it is a sad season to be a lone coug fan.
Don't be embarrassed. Better safe than sorry when it comes to health during pregnancy. I'm glad it was something so minor though.
This post! Where do I begin?
Okay, so the dishwasher. WHAT?!? That is seriously disgusting. I cannot believe that the guy charged you for that. That is absolute robbery. RIDICULOUS!!!! Please send a letter.
Since we moved here, we have had the same thing with our dishwasher. So gross. On a whim, I decided to try those little concentrated detergent packs. I don't know how to explain but you'll see them at the grocery store. They have worked miracles!! Seriously. No film! And I'm not even getting paid to say this...
Next, got a kick out of your heartburn story!! We've all been there. Seriously. It definitely makes it better that you're pregnant. I worry about EVERYTHING when I am pregnant. Everything!! And heartburn is NASTY, btw. It would get so bad when I was pregnant that I would throw up pure stomach acid. Oh, man. I don't know if I could think of anything worse than that... Good luck!! I hope they gave you good drugs for it. Tums never touched it for me.
Oh, Sara! I'm so sorry and so with you on your outrage. That is infuriating that they sent someone out and charged all that hard-earned money for that!!!!! Grrr. Owen is looking old but so cute! I love his obsession with BYU. As for your heartburn story, the way you wrote it had me dying laughing. I was totally laughing with you though and feeling really bad for you at the same time. I had terrible heartburn with some of my pregnancies - it's the WORST. I'm so sorry that your doctor didn't clue in earlier before you having to jump through all those hoops!
That's terrible what they charged you for the dishwasher! We had to have a part on our furnace replaced a few month ago and it cost something like $150 for the part and 30 minutes of labor. Give me a break!
Sorry about your heartburn :( I hope you feel better! I always feel dumb when that happens too. Don't worry, you aren't the only one!
Sara you crack me up! Heartburn! I hear ya though! I've suffered with it with both pregnancies. TUMS was my constant companion. Also I had the same lame thing with the dishwasher when we moved to this area. Apparently the hard water is really bad here but they should have told me that over the phone. The guy was annoyed with me but shouldn't I have been annoyed with him?! WHATEVER!!!!
Oh man Sara. I wish I could have helped you with some info. I had heartburn so bad with all of my pregnancies. It got worse with each one. The dr. finally put me on some medication that really helped. You should definitely send a letter to that company. It's a Utah fact that our water is horrible and so nasty. Hard water ruins everything. There is so way they should have not known that. So ridiculous.
I'm so sorry! And I'm sorry bout Friday. I was actually really sick so i'm glad i didn't see you and Owen. I was throwing up at 10:30 so give it a few weeks or months and i'll be back in business. He is darling! I really think him and Maxwell would have a good time playing with tractors and cars (i saw them in the background :))
ok dont you hate hard water? I asked mom just yesterday why my whites wernt getting clean and she said proabably because of hard water. plus everyone said that when you come to the east your skin gets so soft and you dont ever have to use lotion.. noo at home with our soft water my skin was ten times softer. stupid water.
Sara! That sucks that you had to pay that much for a hard water diagnosis! Though while reading your post I remembered a story that I read on ksl.com about this same issue. You should look at it go here.

And I feel for you on the heartburn! It sucks! And since I've talked to you about it and told you what worked for me I won't reiterate. I hope that you can find something to help soon!
That is horrible! We have that same problem in Midvale. I got so steaming mad every time i opened our supposed to be clean dishwasher. I tried the vinegar and it didn't help at all so I bought some special cleaner at the store just for hard water and i swear to you its MAGIC!
